Prepare your truck and trip for winter
Winter planning starts before the truck moves. Conditions can change quickly, so use current road information and your carrier’s procedures.
Before departure
- Check the forecast and official road-condition reports for the complete route.
- Inspect tires, lights, wipers, washer fluid, defroster and visible air lines carefully.
- Remove snow and ice as required, keeping safe footing and using approved equipment.
- Carry suitable clothing, food, water and a charged communication device.
Build extra time into the plan
Reduce schedule pressure by allowing extra time for slower traffic, plowing operations, fuel stops and parking. Update dispatch early if conditions affect the delivery window.
On the road
- Use a speed appropriate for visibility, surface conditions and traffic.
- Increase following distance and make gradual steering and braking inputs.
- Watch bridge decks, ramps and exposed areas where conditions may change first.
- Stop in a safe place when conditions exceed your comfort or equipment limits.
