Important: this is independent practice, not an official DMV exam. CDL testing is administered by each state. Always study the current CDL manual issued by your state.

What this CDL practice covers

The questions review general-knowledge topics commonly found in state CDL manuals: safe vehicle operation, following distance, braking, hazard awareness, railroad crossings, vehicle inspections, cargo basics and emergency decisions. Endorsement tests such as air brakes, combination vehicles, tanker, passenger, school bus and hazardous materials require additional study.

How to prepare for your state CDL knowledge test

  1. Download the newest CDL manual from your state licensing agency.
  2. Read the general-knowledge section before taking practice tests.
  3. Review every missed answer and find the rule in your state manual.
  4. Study separate sections for every endorsement you need.
  5. Confirm identification, medical and appointment requirements with your state.

Rig Toolbox provides a nationwide general-knowledge study test. Exact wording, passing scores, fees and procedures differ by state. Use our U.S. state directory to find your local authority, and use the U.S. road-sign practice test for additional sign review.

Turn a practice score into a study plan

Do not memorize only the answer shown after a question. Write down the topic you missed—such as stopping distance, inspection, railroad crossings or cargo—and locate the matching section in your state CDL manual. Explain the rule in your own words, then take another randomized set. A consistently strong score is more useful than passing one attempt by guessing.

General knowledge is only the beginning

Applicants may need additional knowledge or skills testing based on the vehicle and work they intend to perform. Combination vehicles, air brakes and individual endorsements have their own material. Requirements can also include medical qualification, identity documents, training and a skills test. The state licensing agency is the final authority for the exact sequence.

Test-day checklist

  • Confirm the appointment location and arrival time.
  • Bring the identification and eligibility documents required by your state.
  • Read each question completely before choosing an answer.
  • Do not treat a practice question as a substitute for the official manual.
  • Ask the licensing agency about any requirement you do not understand.

After the written stage, use the commercial pre-trip study checklist to organize inspection practice. It is a learning guide and should be paired with the procedures taught by your training provider and required by your state.
