What the UK car theory test includes

The official car theory test has a multiple-choice part and a hazard-perception part. Rig Toolbox currently provides original multiple-choice and road-sign practice. It does not simulate the official video hazard-perception assessment.

Topics to study

  • The Highway Code, including road markings and signs
  • Alertness, attitude and safe following distance
  • Vehicle safety, vulnerable road users and motorway driving
  • Documents, incidents and environmental driving

How to use the practice test

Read the current Highway Code first. Take the test without notes, then review each missed answer and find the matching rule in the official material. Repeat with a fresh question order. For Northern Ireland, use the official nidirect preparation guidance.

Multiple-choice and hazard perception need different practice

Multiple-choice study checks whether you understand rules and safe decisions. Hazard perception checks whether you can identify a developing hazard in moving road scenes. Reading signs alone is therefore not complete preparation. Use the official preparation material for the format and scoring of the hazard-perception portion; Rig Toolbox does not claim to reproduce that assessment.

Build understanding instead of memorising

When an answer is wrong, identify the topic and read the relevant Highway Code rule. Consider why each incorrect option would be unsafe. Then take a new randomized set rather than immediately repeating the same order. This helps reveal whether you understand the rule or only remember the previous screen.

Before booking or attending

  • Use the official service for the nation where you are applying.
  • Confirm the required identification and booking details.
  • Check the latest official rules instead of relying on an old screenshot or social post.
  • Allow time to study signs, road markings, vulnerable road users and motorway safety.

Continue with the UK sign test for focused recognition, then return to the full theory set to practise applying those signs in context.
