South Africa K53 learner’s licence guide

Study the three knowledge areas, use current official application information and understand how the learner stage connects to the K53 driving test.

Official learner’s licence information ↗
What the learner’s licence proves: South Africa’s government describes it as proof of basic knowledge of a motor vehicle and the rules of the road. A learner may drive only under the applicable supervision rules.

What to study

  • Rules of the road and safe driving behaviour
  • Road traffic signs, signals and road markings
  • Vehicle controls for the vehicle class
  • Observation, signalling and position
  • Licence-code and supervision requirements

Use study material that matches the vehicle code you intend to drive. Motorcycle, light-motor-vehicle and heavy-motor-vehicle applicants do not have identical requirements.

Application and test-day checklist

  1. Confirm the minimum age and vehicle code with the official provincial licensing authority.
  2. Book through an authorised driving licence testing centre.
  3. Confirm identification, photographs, proof of address and current fee requirements.
  4. Study current K53-aligned road rules, signs and vehicle controls.
  5. Keep the official receipt and follow the testing centre’s instructions.

From learner’s licence to the practical test

The K53 practical driving test includes vehicle checks and driving tasks appropriate to the vehicle class. The official government manual describes the assessment method. Practise with a properly licensed supervising driver and use qualified instruction where required.
