Official format: NZTA describes the learner licence theory test as a computer-based, 35-question, multiple-choice test covering road rules, hazards and safe driving.
What to study for the 2026 test
- Road signs, markings and traffic signals
- Intersections, give-way rules and roundabouts
- Safe speed, following distance and hazard response
- Parking, passing and motorway rules
- Driver responsibilities, alcohol limits and vehicle safety
NZTA added new general Road Code theory questions from 1 December 2025, so use current material rather than an old question list.
A useful study routine
- Read the current Official New Zealand Road Code.
- Work through NZTA’s general and car-driver specialist questions.
- Write down every rule you miss and locate it in the Road Code.
- Repeat mixed questions until you understand the rule, not only the answer.
- Confirm booking, identification and fees on the NZTA website before test day.
After passing
Passing the theory test is one step in New Zealand’s graduated licensing system. Follow the learner-licence conditions shown by NZTA and build supervised driving experience before progressing. Check the current conditions directly with NZTA because licence rules can change.
